Melana Roberts

Toronto Youth Food Policy Council
Co-Chair

Melana Roberts believes inequity in our food system is one of the most pressing injustices in Toronto and Canada today. As a Coordinator for Malvern's Action Neighourhood Change Initiative, she develops, implements and monitors community development initiatives, systems, policies and procedures, in a project management capacity; driving local community development and systems change in north-east Scarborough. With a focus on food security and improving access and equity issues, Melana strives to advance civic action through developing tools and resources that empower all Toronto residents to drive community priorities, in partnership with city and agency bodies. She holds an MA in Development Studies from York University, with a focus on Community Development, Agriculture and Community Health Systems, and has considerable work experience in food security, health promotion, and public engagement projects in Canada, Ecuador, Guyana, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the England. With a firm belief in Anti-Oppression principles and a need for intersectional work, she devotes her time to advocating for systems-change, creating intersectorial linkages to better serve communities facing multiple barriers to access in the GTA. She is a Co-Chair of the Toronto Youth Food Policy Council, a member on the Toronto Food Policy Council, and an advisory member on the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health's NYAC. In her spare time Melana loves to eat, travel and explore her creative passions, moonlighting as a curator and an Editor for From the Root Zine.
